Homeschoolers Depicted as Terrorists

School District Apologized

By , About.com Guide

According to the story in the Muskegon Chronicle, a school district staged a disaster prepardness plan, which is fine in itself, but the problem was in this paragraph:

"The exercise will simulate an attack by a fictitious radical group called Wackos Against Schools and Education who believe everyone should be homeschooled. Under the scenario, a bomb is placed on the bus and is detonated while the bus is traveling on Durham, causing the bus to land on its side and fill with smoke."

After a flood of calls and emails, the school district apologized. "The Muskegon Area Intermediate School District Tuesday issued a statement saying the areawide organization was not aware of the scenario, but nevertheless apologized."

Mr. Dan Stout was responsible for this outrage, but said he didn't intend to offend anyone. However, he was made aware that people would be offended a few weeks before the scenario was staged and decided not to change it. I believe this was poor judgement on his part.
