By Beverly Hernandez, About.com

Lessons

  • National Anthem - It was the valiant defense of Fort McHenry by American forces during the British attack on September 13, 1814 that inspired 35-year old, poet-lawyer Francis Scott Key to write the poem which was to become our national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner."
  • Patriotic Songs & Hymns - Presented here are a few inspirational songs and hymns that I have assembled for all of you with a patriotic heart.
  • Patriotism - Here is a collection of activities on patriotism for the classroom.
  • The Flag - The flag we fly today has 50 stars representing the 50 states on a field of blue with 13 stripes representing the thirteen original states alternating red and white from top to bottom.

Projects

  • A Celebration Timeline - Students map the events of the year with a timeline. Students identify our national holidays, make and use a timeline, and appreciate the unique nature and shared values of family celebrations.
