Martha Washington was born on June 2, 1731, on a plantation near Williamsburg. She married George Washington on January 6, 1759. Martha Washington was the first First Lady. Martha hosted state dinners every week and casual receptions on Friday afternoons. Guests called her “Lady Washington.” She enjoyed her role as first lady, but missed her private life.
