Situated in the southeastern United States, Tennessee was the 16th state to join the Union. The Volunteer State was admitted on June 1, 1796.

Spanish explorers were the first Europeans to arrive in Tennessee, but they didn't settle in the area. In the 1600's, French explorers established trading posts along the Cumberland River. The land eventually fell under British control after the French and Indian War and became a state after the American Revolution.

Tennessee joined other southern states in succeeding from the United States at the start of the Civil War, but it was the first to rejoin the U.S. after the war.

Tennessee is bordered by eight states: Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri, and Arkansas.

The state is home to the Great Smoky Mountains, which include its highest point, Clingman's Dome. West of the Smoky Mountains lies the Cumberland Plateau. This area features Lookout Mountain. Standing atop the mountain, visitors can see seven states!

Although one wouldn't think of Tennessee being a place for major geological activity, in 1812 the state recorded the worst earthquake in the history of the continental U.S.!

Tennessee is probably best known for Music City, the state's capital, Nashville. The city is home to the Grand Ol' Opry, the oldest running radio show in the United States. The show has been on the air since 1925.

Tennessee is also famous for being the site of Elvis Presley's home, Graceland, located in the state's largest city, Memphis.
