Summer Learning Fun - Ideas for Summer Writing

Ideas to keep the kids busy and learning during the summer.

By Beverly Hernandez, About.com

Taking a break from homeschooling? ...that doesn't mean the learning has to stop!

It's hard enough to get the kids writing during the school year, but the summer? It is a good time for letter writing, to family and friends. Keeping a journal of family vacations is a good writing activity - turn it into a scrapbook with pictures and memories from the trip.

Here are some other ideas that you might try. I will be adding to this list all summer, so keep checking back.

  • Create Your Own Adventure
Create a creature adventure starring you and your friends!
  • Finish A Story
Here's a fun story starter, can you finish the story in 50 words or less?
  • KidView Contest
Read books this summer and write KidViews (book reports). You are entered into their weekly drawing for each one submitted.
  • Story Builder
Have fun making your own stories using Squigly's story builder. Squigly and his friends have written some stories that you can personalize with your own words.
  • P.S. I Love You
Something important happens when children receive and write letters.
  • Write On
    Activities to encourage writing.
