Favorite Things - Friday School
As I think back to my homeschool days, there are some specific things that I really enjoyed. I thought that it might be nice if I shared some of my favorite activities and memories from my own homeschool experience.
Friday SchoolOne of my very favorite things was Friday School. I suppose they are called Co-op classes now, but in my day, we called it Friday School. Every Friday we would go to a very large, very old church that had a distinct smell. I really remember the smell and the cold airy feeling that it had. I liked being able to pick what classes I wanted to go to at the beginning of the session. My two favorite classes were Cooking Class and Story Hour.
Cooking ClassThe kitchen in the church had an old stove that had to be lit before every class. I remember that there was always a struggle to get it lit. I don't really remember learning anything besides how to dry silverware by putting it all together in a towel. This was a method which my mom didn't really like so we really never used it at our house, so out went that lesson learned! It seems like it would scratch all of the silverware anyway. I think the thing I loved the most about that class was that you got to eat the yummy treats that you had made and you were allowed to go into the kitchen.
Story HourI remember my friends asking me why in the world I was in Story Hour and I remember loving the class anyway. It was in story hour that I was introduced to the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. I have loved the book ever since and have made sure to read it to my own kids over and over. I believe that we read other books and that we did activities to go along with the stores, but all I remember is loving If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.
I have been in a lot of different co-op classes through the years, but Friday School during my 1st - 3rd grade years were the most special to me.
