Terrorism, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes… How do you handle these major current events with your children? 2011 has been quite a year. History is being made - these events will be in the history books, but such major events can cause anxiety and fear in children. How do you handle it?

I used to gather the children, watch the news together and discuss what was going on. We'd talk about the event, their own safety, what they could do to help, and what they did or didn't need to worry about. What do you do during such times? At what age do you begin sharing with your kids? How much do you tell them? Share Your Thoughts

Great ideas. It is necessary to discuss current news to children to improve their knowledge.

I'll go first...

I used to gather the children and watch the news together and discuss what was going on. We'd talk about the event, their own safety, what they could do to help, what they did or didn't need to worry about. Even when the news of Osama bin Laden's death was breaking, I called my grown children to make sure they were aware and able to hear President Obama address the nation. My oldest daughter followed her upbringing and gathered her children to listen in.
