On January 26, 1837, Michigan became the 26th state to join the Union. The land was first settled by Europeans when the French arrived there in 1668. The British took control following the French and Indian War, and they struggled with the American colonists for control over the land until the early 1800s.

The United States declared Michigan part of the Northwest Territory following the American Revolution, but the British regained control after the War of 1812. Americans once again took and maintained control of the territory in late 1813.

The population grew rapidly after the Erie Canal opened in 1825. The 363-mile long waterway connected the Hudson River in New York to the Great Lakes.

Michigan is made up of two landmasses, the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The two areas are connected by the Mackinac Bridge, a five-mile-long suspension bridge. The state is bordered by Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Indiana, four of the five Great Lakes (Superior, Huron, Erie, and Michigan), and Canada.

The city of Lansing has been Michigan's state capital since 1847. The original state capital, Detroit is (known as the car capital of the world), is home to the Detroit Tigers baseball team and General Motors headquarters. Motown Records, the automobile industry, and Kellogg cereal all got their start in Michigan.
