Field Trip Description

This museum offers the opportunity to learn about the formal elements of art, such as line, color, shape, and form. The permanent collection includes examples of Italian Renaissance and Baroque painting and sculpture, ancient art and artifacts, 19th- and 20th-century European and American painting, Asian art, African art, and Native American art. I'd recommend it for ages 8+. I'm sure younger children would also enjoy aspects of it, but would tire more quickly.

Highlights

*This is one of only five museums in the United States with a unique combination of historical home, art collections and gardens. The gardens alone are worth the visit. There are several cats roaming around outside, property of the museum. The pond also has huge goldfish, which my boys particularly liked. There are gazebo areas on the far side of the garden, perfect for photo shoots.

Cameras are allowed inside, but you cannot use a flash. And I believe you cannot take any pictures inside the special collection exhibit. Still, we had many wonderful opportunities to photograph the kids with famous paintings and sculptures.
