Fire Department Field Trip by Sun-Kissed Scholars
Approximate Cost / Hours
We've found that any of the surrounding fire departments will work with individuals or groups to arrange tours.
Field Trip Description
When we went to the Siloam Springs fire department field trip, with our group, they gave us a tour of the building, brought the children to the trucks, explained fire safety, and illustrated how the equipment is worn. After the official tour, they let parents and older kids try out the fire pole!
My father-in-law is a captain at a Springdale station, so we visit him often to let the kids climb on the trucks and try on his equipment.
Highlights
Besides the obvious benefits of fire safety, who doesn't love dress-up and big trucks? We've also found that the firemen really get into the field trips. They interact with the kids, goof around, give out stickers and mini badges. Everyone comes away with a smile, and new safety information.
Tips & tricks
- Call in advance and ask when they will be testing equipment. Your group could go when they raise the fire truck ladders, or test nearby hydrants.
- Ask if the firemen can try on the equipment for your group. In an actual fire, many children hide because they are frightened by the appearance of the firemen. It's better to be prepared!
- You can request some fire safety stickers to place on your child's window. In the case of an emergency, this lets them find a room with a child inside faster.
