The state now known as West Virginia was originally part of Virginia, one of the original 13 colonies. The area was settled by the British in the 1600s.

The people in the western section of Virginia refused to succeed from the Union at the beginning of the Civil War. West Virginia remained a part of the United States, while Virginia became one of the Confederate States of America.

West Virginia officially became a state, the 35th to enter the Union, on June 20,1863. It is bordered by Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

The state's agricultural and economic products include coal, timber, natural gas, cattle, and poultry.

Pictured on the back of the state quarter, the New River Gorge Bridge is the longest steel span in the western hemisphere. The 3,030-foot long bridge cut the travel time around the gorge from 40 minutes to less than one minute. It spans the New River, which is the only river in the U.S. that flows north instead of south.

The first Mother's Day was celebrated in West Virginia on May 10, 1908. The state also launched the country's first free mail delivery service, which began on October 6, 1896.
