Ohio is located in the northeastern United States. It is situated between Indiana and Pennsylvania. The state is bordered by Kentucky and West Virginia in the south and Michigan to the north.

French explorers and fur traders settled in the area in the late 1600's. England claimed the land following the French and Indian War in the late 1700's.

It became a territory of the United States, the Northeast Territory, following the American Revolution.

Ohio was the 17th state admitted to the union. It became a state on March 1, 1803.

The state's nickname, The Buckeye State, comes from the nut of its state tree, the buckeye. The nut resembles a deer's eye. A male deer is called a buck.

Ohio's flag is the only U.S. flag that isn't rectangular. Instead, it's a red, white, and blue pennant. It features thirteen stars clustered together representing the original 13 colonies and four additional stars indicating Ohio's status as the 17th state.

Seven U.S. presidents were born in Ohio. They are:

  • Ulysses S. Grant
  • Rutherford Birchard Hayes
  • James Abram Garfield
  • Benjamin Harrison
  • William McKinley
  • William Howard Taft
  • Warren Gamaliel Harding

Other famous people from Ohio include the Wright brothers, inventors of the airplane, and Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.
