California was admitted to the Union on September 9, 1850, becoming the 31st state. The state was originally settled by Spanish explorers, but came under the control of Mexico when that country declared its independence from Spain.

The United States gained control over California after the Mexican-American War. Settlers looking to get rich quick flocked to the territory after gold was discovered there in 1849. The territory became a U.S. state the following year.

Covering 163,696 square miles, California is the 3rd largest state in the U.S. It's a state of extremes featuring both the highest (Mt. Whitney) and lowest (Badwater Basin) points in the continental United States.

California's climate is just as varied, ranging from sub-tropical along the southern coast to subalpine in the northern mountains. There are even deserts in between!

Because it sits on the San Andreas Fault, California is home to many earthquakes. The state averages 10,000 quakes a year.
