Hi, my situation is probably going to be a little different from most because my only child left at home, the hser (ds), has a muscular dystrophy. Anyway, he is eight years old and goes to therapy one day a week at this time. Then, there are the many doctors' visits we make as well. Also, my dh goes to school one night a week, and the only way we get to see him on that day is to go meet him for lunch. The net result is that we take time out of the middle of the day (less crowds), and it's usually about 3-4 hours per event, by the time we get ready to go, travel time to and from, and do the actual event itself. A calendar of some sort is an absolute necessity! I use My Yahoo! Calendar along with an appointment book similar to those you see at doctors' offices. I also use an Excel spreadsheet for the grades and lessons I plan to use each day (Monday through Friday).
All that said, we always start off the day with Bible study, about a half hour. Then come the English skills. I need to allow about 1/2 hour of board work for phonics skills per day, about 15 minutes to go over his sight words, a half hour for reading, 15 minutes for his grammer lesson, 15 minutes for spelling, and 15 minutes for handwriting. Then, there's math, science, and social studies. I need to allow about a half hour block of time for each of these, although they usually go by much faster, unless ds gets interested in some part of the lesson, and then I play it by ear. The day is almost always broken up into the increments I mentioned above. There have even been times when I've read his history or science lesson to him as he's going to sleep at night.
Good luck coming up a game plan, and enjoy your family!
