Bookshelves don't have to be expensive solid oak ones. We couldn't afford to invest in major wall units or solid wood. We bought five inexpensive bookshelves in different sizes.
Baskets! (or bins) (or cubes even!) Walmart sells cheap basket-like plastic bins that are great for holding crayons, markers, etc.
My thoughts were that it would encourage more game-playing and puzzle putting-together. I thought it would be a neat area for building lego creations too.
Decorating our home has become a hobby & challenge of mine. How exactly do you decorate your home (or at least give it a pleasant appearance) in homeschooling style?
We kept the existing door and sidelight window there, but decided to take advantage of the space by filling one wall with bookshelves. All of our homeschooling books, materials, games, puzzles, building toys, puppets, and tons of books are stored in here.
The hallway in our house is very long and narrow. To break up the appearance of a never-ending hallway, we hung up giant bulletin boards - one for each child.
I have discovered that "traffic flow" in a homeschooling home is a tad bit different (and a tad more intense) than in a regular home. I liked the idea of setting up "centers" or "stations" for different activities.
Reconsider Uses of Existing Pieces. If your lifestyle is not condusive to fine china and linens, and you don't mind putting the "nicer stuff" away, you may want to consider using hutches for displaying kids' sculptures, masterpieces, or collections.
