It isn't often the topic of homeschooling graces the silver screen. This year Disney's Dolphin Tale touched on the subject, but clearly the boy & the dolphin were the primary focus. Three ambitious homeschool dads would like to shed more light on the topic homeschooling in the world's first feature-length documentary on the topic. Their aim is to educate the general public about homeschooling by following a family as they make the decision to homeschool. The movie will be called Class Dismissed.
Thus far the filmmakers have shot several dozen expert interviews, plus many homeschool families and students. In 2012 they plan on capturing the family footage and submit the film to popular film festivals like Sundance. So far the film is being financed via crowdsourcing plus some support from a few homeschooling organizations. The director is a senior editor for Lucas Films in San Francisco and the co-director is an award-winning filmmaker in Seattle. Being homeschool fathers, I'd expect they'll give homeschooling the credit it deserves and dispel commons homeschool myths, like socialization issues.
More information about the film, including a pre-teaser trailer can be found on the film's site: HomeschoolFilm.com.
