New Year's Day is celebrated around the world on January 1st each year. The day celebrates the start of  a new year and memories of the past year.

One of the most popular New Year's traditions in America is held at New York City's Times Square. People gather and wait for hours in the crowed streets to watch the dropping of a ball weighing 1,000 pounds, made of Waterford crystal and adorned with 9,000 LED lights.

The ball drops 114 feet and is timed to reach the bottom of its pole at midnight, signalling the start of the New Year.

In the United States, many traditional New Year's meals include black-eyed peas (for good luck) and cabbage (for money).
