1927 - Babe Ruth Sets Home Run Record
On September 30, 1927, Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run of the season breaking his own home run record. This record held until 1961 when Roger Maris hit 61 home runs in one season, followed by Mark McGuire with 62 in 1998, then Barry Bonds with 63 in 2001. Also on this day in 1934, Babe Ruth played his last game for the New York Yankees.

Archaeopteryx Fossil Discovery Announced
On September 30, 1861, Hermann von Meyer announced the discovery of a Archaeopteryx specimen found near Langenaltheim. The Archaeopteryx is an extinct primitive toothed bird of the Jurassic period having a long feathered tail and hollow bones; usually considered the most primitive of all birds.
