1829 - Scotland Yard Established
On September 29, 1829, London's Metropolitan Police Department (also known as Scotland Yard) was formed. The headquarters was originally located on a short street called Great Scotland Yard within Whitehall. The Metropolitan Police was formed by Sir Robert Peel by the passing of the Metropolitan Police Act. The police officers became known as "bobbies" or "peelers" derived from Sir Robert Peel's name.
1988 - First American Woman to Climb Mount Everest
On September 29, 1988, Stacey Allison from Portland, Oregon, became the first American woman to climb to the top of Mount Everest. Mount Everest is located in the Himalayas in Asia. It is the world's highest mountain above sea level.

National Coffee Day
September 29th is National Coffee Day. On National Coffee Day, coffee houses all over offer discounted or free coffee. It's a good day to take your homeschool lessons to the coffee house and enjoy a cup while your children read. If you're in the Rhode Island/Bristol County, Massachusetts area, Dunkin' Donuts will donate 50 cents for every hot cup of coffee purchased to Special Olympics so be sure and get a cup or two on September 29th.
