490 B.C. - Marathon Race
The name Marathon comes from the legend of a 25-mile run by Pheidippides, a Greek messenger. He was sent from Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persian Army had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon. In 1896 at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, a 25 mile race was staged to commemorate this event. The marathon distance was later established at 26 miles, 385 yards.
