On October 25, 1955, the first domestic microwave oven was introduced in Mansfield, Ohio, by the Tappan Company. Raytheon had demonstrated the world’s first microwave oven in 1947, called the “Radarange.” But it was the size of a refrigerator and cost between $2,000-$3,000, making it impractical for household use. Raytheon and the Tappan Stove Company entered into a licensing agreement to make a smaller, more affordable unit. In 1955, the Tappan Company introduced the first domestic model that was the size of a conventional oven and cost $1,300, still out of reach for most households. In 1965, Raytheon bought out Amana Refrigeration and 2 years later, came out with the first countertop microwave oven that cost just under $500. By 1975, microwave oven sales exceeded that of gas ranges.

December 6th is Microwave Oven Day. Microwave ovens cook food by passing an electromagnetic wave through it; heat results from the absorption of energy by the water molecules in the food. What's your favorite use for the microwave oven?
