Dolley Madison was born on May 20, 1768, in North Carolina. Dolley filled in as White House Hostess during Thomas Jefferson's presidency. When James Madison became president, Dolley was a natural as First Lady and was known for her social graces.
Levi's with Rivets Patented
On May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis (a Reno, Nevada tailor) received the patent for using copper rivets to strengthen the pockets of denim work pants. Jacob Davis had a customer that continually ripped the pockets of his pants, so he came up with this idea and it was a big hit. He was afraid others would copy his idea, but didn't have the $68 to apply for a patent. So he asked businessman, Levi Strauss to share the patent with him.
Lindbergh Began Transatlantic Flight
On May 20, 1927, American aviator Charles Lindbergh began the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. He took off from New York on May 20 and landed in Paris on May 21, 1927.
