Roosevelt Declares Bank Holiday
On March 5, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared a "bank holiday." Being sworn in as President of a nation that was in the midst of the Great Depression, Roosevelt acted quickly to put a freeze on banking in order to get the Emergency Banking Act passed. Beginning his weekly "fireside chats" the following week helped to restore public confidence.
