Betsy Ross was born Elizabeth Griscom on January 1, 1752 and died on January 30, 1836, at the age of 84. The story goes that George Washington, Robert Morris and George Ross met with her in her home and asked her to sew the first flag. According to Betsy Ross, General Washington showed her a rough design of the flag that had 6-pointed stars. She demonstrated how to make a 5-point star with a single snip of the scissors. This impressed the gentlemen and they entrusted her with making the flag. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the national flag.
