Here's a more detailed list of January Holidays and Events with worksheets, coloring pages and activities to provide teachable moments for January 15th.

Martin Luther King's Birthday
Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a charismatic civil rights leader and Baptist minister who campaigned against the segregation of African Americans. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. He delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech at the 1963 March on Washington. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. Because King's birthday is so close to the holiday season, we celebrate Martin Luther King Day on the 3rd Monday in January. This move was made to help the holiday get approved.

National Hat Day
National Hat Day is January 15th in recognition of the first top hat. On January 15, 1797, James Heatherington from England left his shop wearing a top hat. The story goes that a crowd assembled, turning into a shoving match, resulting in a fine for Heatherington. A top hat is a hat with a tall crown usually covered with silk or with beaver fur.

National Strawberry Ice Cream Day
January 15th is National Strawberry Ice Cream Day. What a great day to celebrate! Pick up some strawberry ice cream and enjoy! Or, better yet, make your own strawberry ice cream.
