National Kazoo Day
January 28th is National Kazoo Day. A kazoo is a musical instrument in the membranophone family. A kazoo has a membrane that makes a sound when you hum into the mouthpiece. When I was in high school, we had a kazoo band that sat together at the football games and kazoo'd the team on! Can you kazoo?
Challenger Disaster
On January 28, 1986, Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after take off, causing the loss of life for the entire crew. The disaster shocked the nation. The space shuttle program was suspended for a while, but eventually resumed until the program was ended in 2011.

U.S. Coast Guard Established
The U.S. Coast Guard was established on January 28, 1915, when the Revenue cutter Service merged with the Lifesaving Service. "The Coast Guard as established January 28, 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times."
National Blueberry Pancake Day
January 28th is National Blueberry Pancake Day. Celebrate this day by eating some blueberry pancakes for breakfast or even dinner. Maine produces 98% of the nation's low-bush blueberries.
