Here's a more detailed list of January Holidays and Events with worksheets, coloring pages and activities to provide teachable moments for January 1st.

New Year's Day
New Year's Day is, of course, the first day of the new year. Many people make New Year's Resolutions, resolving to make changes or decisions in their lives. To resolve means: to form a purpose; to make a decision; especially, to determine after reflection; as, to resolve on a better course of life. What is your New Year's resolution for 2011?

Z Day
January 1st is Z Day. On Z Day, people with last names beginning with the letter Z get to go first in line.

Betsy Ross's Birthday
Betsy Ross was an American seamstress said to have made the first American flag at the request of George Washington. Betsy Ross was born Elizabeth Griscom on January 1, 1752 and died on January 30, 1836, at the age of 84. The story goes that George Washington, Robert Morris and George Ross met with her in her home and asked her to sew the first flag. According to Betsy Ross, General Washington showed her a rough design of the flag that had 6-pointed stars. She demonstrated how to make a 5-point star with a single snip of the scissors. This impressed the gentlemen and they entrusted her with making the flag. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the national flag.
