Arizona Admission Day
Arizona became the 48th state on February 14, 1912. Phoenix is the capital city and largest city located in south central Arizona. It is situated in a former desert that has become a prosperous agricultural area thanks to irrigation. I was born in Superior, Arizona. There's nothing like traveling through an Arizona desert at dusk - I love the Saguaro cactus, the tumbleweeds, and the beautiful sunsets! Arizona is one of the four corner states. Bordering at the same point with Colorado, Utah and New Mexico.
Oregon Admission Day
Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. Salem is the capital city of Oregon. Portland is a freshwater port and the largest city in Oregon. Portland is located in northwestern Oregon on the Willamette River which divides the city into east and west sections. Portland is known for its beautiful natural setting among the mountains.
First Presidential Photograph
On February 14, 1849, Mathew Brady photographed President James Polk making him the first president to be photographed while in office. Mathew Brady was a pioneer photographer famous for his portraits, especially of presidents. He was the official Union photographer for the American Civil War.
Ferris Wheel Day
February 14th is Ferris Wheel Day in honor of the birth George Washington Gale Ferris. Ferris is best remembered for his invention of the Ferris wheel. A Ferris wheel is a vertical rotating mechanism consisting of a large wheel with suspended seats that remain upright as the wheel rotates.
