It's the location of a United States naval base that was attacked by the Japanese on December 7, 1941, which crippled the U.S. fleet and caused the U.S. to enter World War II. The attack was in two waves and was over in 90 minutes. 2,386 Americans died and 1,139 were wounded. 18 ships were sunk or disabled, including 5 battleships. A Declaration of War was requested by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and approved by Congress on December 8, 1941. President Roosevelt proclaimed December 7, 1941 "a date which will live in infamy."
