1894 - Amelia Bloomer Died
Amelia Bloomer (May 27, 1818 – December 30, 1894) was a women's rights and temperance advocate. Amelia Bloomer edited The Lily which was the first newspaper for women. She became interested in dress reform and advocated that women should wear what became known as the “Bloomer Costume.” This was a copy of a knee-length dress with pants worn by Elizabeth Smith Miller of New York. She wrote about and published pictures of the Bloomer Costume in The Lily and women all over the country inquired about the dress and requested a pattern.
Kennedy Half Dollar
After President John F. Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963, it was decided to memorialize him on a coin. The front of the coin was designed by Gilroy Roberts and the back by Frank Gasparro. On December 30, 1963, Congress authorized the Kennedy half dollar. Replacing the Franklin half dollar, the first Kennedy half dollar was released on March 24, 1964.
1911 - Sun Yat-sen Elected 1st President of China
Sun Yat-sen, commonly called the "Father of Modern China," was elected the 1st President of China on December 30, 1911. Sun Yat-sen organized the Kuomintang and led the revolution that overthrew the Manchu dynasty in 1911 and 1912.
