Guide Review - Ancient Egyptians and their Neighbors

Ancient Egyptians and Their Neighbors is an excellent resource for your study on ancient civilizations of the Egyptians, the Mesopotamians, the Nubians and the Hittites. I love that the historic information is included with the hands-on projects that give your students a better understanding of these ancient cultures.

Each unit begins with a brief history and geography of the land. The architecture is covered next, complete with projects to construct your own models of pyramids, gardens, and homes. You'll make your own ancient clothes, learn about the hair and makeup, and make your own jewelry. Then comes the fun, learning their alphabets and writing secret notes. Since every civilization requires work to keep things going, you'll study what each civilization did to 'earn a living' and keep their households running. Next you'll discover the foods by cooking and tasting some ancient recipes. The units are wrapped up with a discussion of the religion of the people and what they believed about the afterlife.

When learning about the Egyptians, you'll build a pyramid, make a boy's kilt and a girl's long dress, make an Egyptian bracelet and necklace. You'll do laundry like the Egyptians and try some fig cakes. For the Mesopotamians, you'll learn to weave on a hanging loom and try math Sumerian-style. For the Nubians, you'll make an irrigation machine and try some millet breakfast porridge. For the Hittites, you'll try scribal schoolwork and writing on clay.

For ages 9 and up.
