Reptiles are a group of vertebrates that includes crocodiles, lizards, snakes, and turtles. Reptiles have some specific characteristics in common, including:

  • They are four-legged vertebrate animals.
  • Most lay eggs.
  • Their skin is covered with scales (or scutes).
  • They have cold-blooded metabolisms.

Because they are cold-blooded, or ectothermic, reptiles must bask in the sun to increase their internal body temperature, which in turn, allows for a higher level of activity (as a rule, warm lizards run faster than cool lizards). When they overheat, reptiles shelter in the shade to cool down, and at night many species are virtually immobile.

Teach students about these and other interesting reptile facts with free printables offered in the following slides.
