James Monroe, the fifth president (1817-1825) of the United States, was born on April 28, 1758, in Virginia. He was the oldest of five siblings. Both of his parents died by the time James was 16, and the teenager had to take over his father's farm and care for his four younger siblings.

Monroe was enrolled in college when the Revolutionary War began. James left college to join the militia and went on the serve under George Washington

After the war, Monroe studied law by working at the practice of Thomas Jefferson. He entered politics where he served many roles including governor of Virginia, congressman, and U.S. delegate. He even helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase.

Monroe was elected president at the age of 58 in 1817. He served two terms.

James Monroe is most famous for the Monroe Doctrine, an American foreign policy opposing interference in the western hemisphere from outside powers. This doctrine included South America and stated that any attack or attempt at colonization would be considered an act of war.

The country did well and grew during Monroe’s presidency. Five states joined the Union while he was in office: Mississippi, Alabama, Illinois, Maine, and Missouri.

Monroe was married and the father of three children. He married Elizabeth Kortright in 1786. Their daughter, Maria, was the first person to be married in the White House.

In 1831, James Monroe died at the age of 73 in New York after contracting an illness. He was the third president, after John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, to die on July 4.
