James Madison was the 4th President of the United States. He was born on March 16, 1751, in Virginia. James was the oldest of the 12 children of a wealthy tobacco farmer.

He was an intelligent young man who loved to read. He was also a good student and attended boarding school from the age of 12 until graduation. After boarding school, Madison attended what is now Princeton University.

He became a lawyer and politician. Madison was a member of the Virginia legislature and, later, the Continental Congress with such influential Americans as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson (Madison served as Secretary of State during Jefferson's presidency), and John Adams

Referred to as the “Father of the Constitution," Madison was instrumental in creating the office of president and setting up the federal system of checks and balances

He also helped create the U.S. government, including drafting the Articles of Confederation and authoring some of the 86 Federalist Papers. This series of essays convinced some of the reluctant colonies to accept the Constitution.

In 1794, James married Dolley Todd, a widow and one of the United States' most memorable first ladies. The two never had any children together, but Madison adopted Dolley's son, John.

James Madison took office in 1809 and served until 1817. During his time in office, the War of 1812 was fought, Louisiana and Indiana became states, and Francis Scott Key wrote The Star Spangled Banner

At only 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing less than 100 pounds, Madison was the smallest of all U.S. presidents.

James Madison died on June 28, 1836, the last living signer of the United States Constitution.
