The Louisiana Purchase

Though he bitterly opposed Hamilton's push to increase the reach of the federal government when the two served in the nation's first cabinet, Jefferson greatly increased the power of the federal government after he became president. In 1803, Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory from France for $15 million -- in a move that more than doubled the size of the country and was the most important act of his administration. He sent Meriwether Lewis and George Clark on their famous expedition to explore the new territory. Students will learn this fact -- and more -- from this vocabulary worksheet.

Deadly Duel and Treason

Aaron Burr actually served as vice president under Jefferson after nearly winning the office himself. In an ironic twist of history, Hamilton helped Jefferson win the election. Burr never forgot, and eventually killed Hamilton in an infamous duel at Weehawken, New Jersey, in  1804. Burr was eventually arrested and tried for treason "on charges of plotting to annex Spanish territory in Louisiana and Mexico to be used toward the establishment of an independent republic," notes History.com. Jefferson was married, a fact students can learn about in the First Lady Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson coloring page. Skelton Jefferson was born on Oct. 19, 1748, in Charles City County, Virginia. Her first husband died from an accident and she married Thomas Jefferson on Jan. 1, 1772. They had six children, but she was not in good health and died in 1782 after giving birth to the sixth child. Jefferson became president 19 years after her death.
