James K. Polk (November 2, 1795 – June 15, 1849) was the 11th President of the United States. James Polk was known as the first "dark horse" president because he was relatively unknown prior to winning the Democratic Party’s nomination. Polk negotiated with Great Britain for Oregon, but had to declare war against Mexico to claim New Mexico and California. Polk’s health suffered from all the hard work and he became ill and died just 3 months after leaving office.
