Andrew Jackson served as the 7th President of the United States from 1829 to 1837.

Born in Waxhaw, South Carolina on March 15, 1767, Jackson was the son of poor Irish immigrants. His father died just a few weeks before he was born. His mother died when he was 14.

Andrew Jackson joined the Army as a messenger during the Revolutionary War when he was just 13. He later fought in the War of 1812.

Jackson moved to Tennessee after the American Revolution. He worked as a lawyer and became involved in state politics, first as a state representative and later as a Senator.

Jackson married Rachel Donelson, the divorced mother of 11 children, in 1791. It was later discovered that her divorce had not been properly finalized. The error was corrected and the two remarried, but the scandal marred Jackson's political career.

Rachel died a few weeks before Jackson became president in 1829. He blamed her death on personal attacks from his political opponents.

Andrew Jackson was the first president to ride a train and the first to live in a log cabin. Because of his humble upbringing, he is considered the first common man to be elected president.

Sadly, one of the notable results of Jackson's presidency was his signing of the Indian Removal Act in May of 1830. This law forced thousands of Native Americans to move from their homes to unsettled land west of the Mississippi.

It was also during Jackson's presidency that the Cherokee Indians were forcibly removed from their land in what became known as the Trail of Tears. This resulted in the deaths of 4,000 Native Americans.

It has been reported that Jackson once said that one of his two regrets in life was being unable to shoot Henry Clay, the Senator from Kentucky.

Jackson is pictured on the 20 dollar bill.
