Elizabeth Wallace Truman was born on February 13, 1885, in Independence, Missouri. Elizabeth was nicknamed Bess as a child. She had been Harry Truman’s childhood sweetheart and they married in June of 1919. Bess Truman wasn’t particularly fond of the formalities and the social obligations of life in the White House, but she fulfilled her obligations when necessary.
