Julia Dent Grant was born on January 26, 1826, in St. Louis, Missouri. She married Ulysses S. Grant in 1848. With the end of the Civil War and the Union restored, the Grants were very popular. Julia entertained often and lavishly. Their daughter’s wedding at the White House was elaborate and beautiful, with the East Room decked out in white roses. Julia had said that her time in the White House was “the happiest period of my life.” Julia died on December 14, 1902, in Washington, D.C.
