Mamie Doud Eisenhower was born on November 14, 1896 in Boone, Iowa. Dwight and Mamie married in 1916 when Dwight was an army lieutenant. Mamie moved her household 28 times as her husband changed assignments. Mamie was a popular First Lady who set fashion trends with her short bangs and fondness for pink. Mamie liked her privacy and made few public appearances, but she was a gracious hostess and planned state dinners and supervised the White House domestic staff.
