Barack Hussein Obama II (born August 4, 1961) became the 44th President of the United States on January 20, 2009. He was the first African American to hold the office of President. At 47 years of age at the time of his inauguration, he was also one of the youngest American presidents in history.

President Obama served two terms, from 2009-2017. Though he only served two terms, Obama has taken the oath of office four times! During his first inauguration, the oath had to be repeated due to an error in the wording.

The second time, the president was officially sworn in on Sunday, January 20, 2013, as required by the U.S. Constitution. The oath was repeated the following day for the inaugural festivities.

He grew up in Hawaii and his mother was from Kansas. His father was Kenyan. After his parents divorced, Barack's mother remarried and the family moved to Indonesia where they lived for several years.

On October 3, 1992, Barack Obama married Michelle Robinson and together they have two daughters, Malia and Sasha.

Barack Obama graduated from Columbia University in 1983 and Harvard Law School in 1991. He was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996. He served in this role until 2004 when he was elected to the United States Senate.

In 2009, President Obama became one of three U.S. Presidents to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He was also named Time Magazine's Person of the Year in both 2009 and 2012.

One of his most notable achievements as president was signing the Affordable Care Act into law. This took place on March 23, 2010.

The former president enjoys sports and likes to play basketball. He has also authored several books and is reported to be a fan of the Harry Potter series.
