On September 20, 1881, Chester A. Arthur was inaugurated becoming the third president to serve in one year. Rutherford B. Hayes finished up his term in 1881 and James A. Garfield took over in March. James A. Garfield was shot on July 2 and died of his wounds on September 19, 1881. Vice President Chester Arthur then took over as president making him the 3rd president to serve that year.
