Andrew Johnson (December 29, 1808 - July 31, 1875) was the 17th President of the United States. He was elected vice president and succeeded Lincoln when Lincoln was assassinated. While he was in office the Civil Rights Act of 1866 and the Fourteenth Amendment were passed; Alaska was purchased from Russia for two cents an acre, and Nebraska became a state. An act of impeachment was brought against Andrew Johnson in the spring of 1868; he was acquitted by one vote.
