Recommended Reading - Upper Levels (Grades 5-12)
Books recommended by participants of the Summer Reading Club.

"The Hobbit" (compare prices)
by J.R.R. Tolkien
Level: 5th and up

I am not sure of the reading level, my 5th grader Stan read it. This book was one of fantasy based on biblical principles according to the author.  The premise is one of moral courage.  Stan liked the book because of the way the book was written, and the uniqueness of the book for those of unacquainted with Tolkien.

"Left Behind" - The Kids (compare prices)
by Tim LaHaye/Jerry Jenkins
Level: 5th and up

We've been studying the Book of Revelation and these books are just icing to our cake!  When my kids ask for one more chapter, you know you've got them hooked.

"A Wrinkle in Time" (compare prices)
by Madeline L'Engle
Level: 5th grade

I remember reading this book myself when I was a kid, and my 10 year old enjoys it as much as I did.  This is a fascinating tale of fantasy and mystery, which will delight Harry Potter fans.

"Summer of the Monkeys" (compare prices)
by Wilson Rawls
Level: 5th up

I read this with my daughter and I couldn't wait each day till we would read. Movie no way shows how great a book it is. Teaches caring about other people but it is also just a neat book to read. Funny, sad and exciting. About a 14 yr old finding lost monkeys and trying to catch them for the money offered. It is a summer of thrills and danger and I think every child would enjoy it and the parents also.

"Harper Hall of Pern"
by Anne McCaffrey
Level: Jr. High

This is actually a trilogy of three book with young main characters. The first two books follow the adventures of Menolly of Half Circle Sea Hold as she overcomes the indifference of her family to her talents and learns independence.

The second book follows Menolly as she learns to deal with her music at Harper Hall and the fact that she is the first female Singer to be at Harper Hall in almost a half century. She must also deal with the way other people mis-perceive her.

The third book follows young apprentice Harper Piemur, a friend of Menolly, and his adventures as his world is slowly changing.

Recommended because they have no profanity or other untoward scenes.

"Hatchet" (compare prices)
by Gary Paulsen
Level: 5th-7th grade

Great story about a 13 year old boy whose single engine plane crashes in the woods of Canada. He must now learn to survive using the hatchet he received as a birthday gift.
