Inexpensive Dates with your Mate
Fun and creative ideas for time alone as a couple.

From:  HeatherD
2 romantic ideas we have enjoyed. Both are based on - my husband goes to work at about 4 am, and everything works better if we all go to bed EARLY! so:
just before putting the kids to bed, we share a soda (I don't normally drink them). By the time I get the kids to bed the sugar has kicked in. Then we dim the lights and turn on the Everly brothers and slow dance for about 10-15 minutes. That's it, except that it sets a nice mood...

The other idea is that while I'd put the kids to bed, when we used to have a jetted tub my husband would start it filling. He'd already be in by the time I got there, and it would cool down enough for me. Now, ours was built for 2, so it was roomy. But it could maybe be done in a regular tub. If both can't fit, one can and the other can "visit" or wash! We just enjoyed "pillow talk" in the tub together. Another 10-15 minute date, that left us both feeling relaxed. (The dancing idea left us both more invigorated, so was better for Friday night.)

Create-A-Date: My very favorite way to get away on the cheap is to go with my honey to the grocery store and spend $25 on "exotic" munchies...smoked oysters, marinated olives, pate', some cheeses, a baguette. Then, we'll go peruse the wine shelves for something we haven't tried. Then it's off to the beach, or the park, or the empty ball field, for a leisurely sunset picnic. It's easier for me to do that complete 180* necessary to change my view of myself from Mom/Teacher to lovable/datable/feminine creature - when we're out, away from the house and the kids and the books and the phone, in a totally different environment. Once transformed, I can focus solely on him, which always makes him a VERY happy camper! (In extreme weather, this can be a whole lot of fun without ever leaving the car!!)

My Idea is to have the kids help me clean up the house real good and then set the table up real nice with flowers and candles. My daughter loves to help with this. Get out the best dishes and fix my husband his favorite meal. Ship the kids off to the babysitters. Then put on something nice and wait for him to get home.

For a creative and inexpensive date we could go get an ice cream and just sit and chat at a park or by the water. I know sounds boring but, with 4 kids that's enough for us!!

When weather permits, we take a walk around the neighborhood together and during the winter this time changes to drives around the neighborhood together. We try to do this at least three times a week. Another idea: We go out for pie and coffee together instead of ordering two full meals. It costs less and yet we still feel we have "splurged" a little on ourselves.

Me and my husband take drives up the mountains or out in the desert. We might stop and pick up a drink and a candy bar to share, and we always bring a blanket to sit on in case its nice enough to get out and see the view!

Add building a new home as a family and it is really hard to find time alone. We try to take advantage of the wonderful restaurants and shows available here in the Reno/Sparks area once a month and that is a wonderful recharge!

One of the neatest dates that I have ever been on with my husband was right at home. He made my dinner, complete with candle light, center table arrangement, white grape bubbly, and of all things wore a suit over his work clothes! He asked my son to play his guitar softly for us in the background. We couldn't get a sitter that night and it didn't matter in the least. The kids were in on it and by the time we all quit giggling over dad's most romantic way of doing things, Mom and Dad escaped downstairs to the basement study (with the door locked of course) to enjoy the rest of the evening together.

We have a local winery that in the summer time has bands come and play jazz. It is free and you can either buy wine and cheese there or you can bring your own picnic. If you can't get the night off without the kids bring them with you. they let the children play in a separate area while the adults listen to the music.

The best inexpensive date is to go out on the front porch and just kick back on the lawn chairs. Just looking at all those stars while listening to an easy listening radio station and just holding hands.
