Arkansas became the United State's 25th state on June 15, 1836. Situated just west of the Mississippi River, Arkansas was first explored by Europeans in 1541.

The land became part of France's holdings in North America in 1682. It was sold to the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

Arkansas was one of eleven southern states to secede from the Union during the Civil War. It was readmitted in 1866.

Although Arkansas is spelled like the state of Kansas, it is pronounced Ar-can-saw by law! Yes, there is actually a state law regarding how to pronounce the state's name

Arkansas is the only state in the U.S. where diamonds are mined. Visitors to the state can mine for diamonds in Crater of Diamonds State Park, something you can't do anywhere else in the world! The state's other natural resources include natural gas, coal, and bromine.

Arkansas's eastern border is made up almost entirely of the Mississippi River. It is also bordered by Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Missouri. The state capital, Little Rock, is located in the geographic center of the state.
