The Bottom Line

At first, I was a bit skeptical about this program. But as I rolled up my sleeves and explored the materials, I fell in love with it. Zoo-phonics takes reading that is very abstract, and turns it into something that is concrete and understandable through music, stories and games.

Guide Review - Zoo-phonics

Zoo-phonics brings learning phonics to life. Each letter of the alphabet is represented by a friendly animal and assigned a physical body motion or "signal." The animals help children remember the shapes and sounds of the letters. The body movements help cement the phonemic information into memory and also helps children get the wiggles out making learning fun!

Zoo-phonics differs from other programs because it teaches lowercase letters and sounds first. When these have been learned, uppercase letters and letter names are introduced. The alphabet is taught from "a-z." To make it fun, children sing and move to the alphabet song, "Come Meet us at the Zoo" along with 19 other songs.

The lessons are reinforced with the games provided in the kit. The card games, Old Maid, Zoo-Fish, and Zoo-Memory are played with the deck of 53 cards. The cards can also be used to spell and read words. Zoo Bingo is a fun way to build letter recognition with the Zoo-phonics animals. Gordo Gorilla's Banana Party is a fun and colorful board game that provides real reading and signaling experience. It is for 2 to 6 players and can be played on three skill levels. More games are provided on the Read & Spell CD-ROM. There are 15 activities with 10 to 15 games in each one.

Parents are provided with crucial tools and skills needed to lead their children to success through the Zoo-Parent Guide and the Signal Practice Video. It really is amazing to watch the children spelling out words with the body signals.
