Reptiles are cold-blooded vertebrates whose bodies are covered with scales. What does that mean?

Cold-blooded means that reptiles can't maintain their own body temperature like mammals can. They rely on their environment to regulate their body temperature. That's why you often find reptiles lying on a warm rock, basking in the sun. They are warming their bodies.

When it's cold, reptiles don't hibernate like some mammals do. Instead, they go into a period of extremely limited activity called brumation. They may not even eat during this period. They may burrow down into the soil or find a cave or crevice in which to spend the winter.

Vertebrate means that reptiles have a backbone like mammals and birds. Their bodies are covered with bony plates or scales, and most reproduce by laying eggs.

Help your students explore the fascinating world of reptiles by assembling their own reptile coloring book. Print the coloring pages below and bind them together to create the book.

Also, when a crocodile's mouth is shut, his teeth are still visible, whereas an alligator's are not. See what else your students can discover about the differences between these two reptiles.

There are about 3,000 different species of snakes in the world. Fewer than 400 of those species are venomous. Although we often picture snakes with fangs and flicking tongues, only venomous snakes have fangs.

Snakes have unique jaws that are attached to ligaments, tendons, and muscles that allow them to move independently of each other. As a result, snakes can work their mouths around prey much larger than them and swallow it whole.
