I agree that the first year is exploratory, both for the mom and the kids, especially if you are pulling from traditional school. Don't expect much the first year. The second year is usually the transitional year where you are changing your philosphy of homeschooling and making curriculum changes. I found that by the 3rd year we had a clearer vision of where we were going and how we were going to get there. Our third year has been far more successful than the first two, even with a very difficult pregnancy thrown in.

I would hesitate to spend very much money on curriculum the first year or two until you are more sure of yourself.
Resist the temptation to give up during the first year! Constantly remind yourself of why you are doing this. So many give up during or right after the first year not realizing it gets so much better. Kinda like being married!
