Survive Your First Homeschool Convention

By Beverly Hernandez, About.com

Your first homeschool convention can be quite overwhelming.  Here are some tips to make it a more enjoyable and successful time for you.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: varies

Here's How:

  1. Leave children at home.
  2. Go with your husband or a friend.
  3. Plan a nice lunch.
  4. Choose workshops that sound interesting to you.
  5. Choose workshops that are age appropriate for your children.
  6. Not all methods of homeschooling are for everyone, don't feel intimidated if you don't agree with the speaker.
  7. Don't take any one teaching as the "only way".
  8. Feel free to leave one workshop and catch the tail end of another.
  9. Glean the information that fits your style and needs of your family.
  10. To avoid impulse buying and overspending, leave your checkbook and credit cards at home.
  11. Take a small amount of cash.
  12. Pick up catalogs.
  13. Listen to demonstrations and take notes.
  14. Ask the vendors questions.
  15. Go back and look again at what caught your eye.

Tips:

  1. If you already know what you want, go prepared to make your purchases. The vendors often offer convention discounts and you save shipping charges.
  2. It is very easy to overspend on things you don't really need and might not use. If you plan on making purchases, find a quiet spot to make your decisions.
  3. Bring home something fun for the kids to get them enthused about the school year.
